Whether you are running a business or have a computer in your home, backing up your data is imperative. In fact, personal files hold more value to most of us than business files. Think of how you would feel if you suddenly lost all of your precious family photos, or your history of emails. In this day and age, many people take their computers for granted, and don’t give a second thought to just how much of their lives exist on their hard drives.

For most people, backing up their computer data is considered such a chore that they keep putting on the back burner. It’s one of those tasks that they know they should be doing, but never seem to get around to, until it’s too late. Recent studies have shown that even businesses have trouble with this task, as low as 25% of businesses back up their data on a regular basis.

No matter how careful you may think you are, there are many reasons that your data may be lost. An unexpected power surge caused by a storm, a virus slipping its way through your defenses while your kids are checking their emails or simply an unexplainable hard drive malfunction could all result in the complete obliteration of your files. Backing up doesn’t have to be difficult, and it doesn’t have to be expensive either. There are plenty of free options available out there that will be more than sufficient for the average user. The best backup software should give you the option of scheduling your backups on a regular basis. With the cost of external hard drives being so low, you should be able to plug one into your desktop or laptop, set up a regular backup routine, and never have to worry about it again. While your computer is idle, you will be secure in the knowledge that all your precious memories and important documents are being copied at a predefined time every day.

To put it in simple terms, nothing in the computer industry is fool proof. Hard drives can crash, the laptop can get stolen, or it can even be dropped and rendered useless. To ensure that we are never left without our precious data, we should always create a backup of our information.

There is no mistaken the fact that over a million laptops have been stolen over the years in the United States alone. Anytime a laptop is stolen, chances are that it won’t be recovered. The only drawback to laptops is the fact that they don’t offer near as much storage or security measures as a desktop PC. Desktop computers have a lot more power, and they can also do things (including backups) in a fraction of the time.

The laptop computer was designed for on the go use, which is the main reason why people don’t really think about backing up their data. When the thought finally does come to mind, it is normally too late to do anything about it.

As mentioned above, the easiest and quickest way to backup your laptop data is to use an online backup service. Depending on your connection to the Internet, it can take anywhere from several minutes to several hours. Although it may take you a little bit of time, you’ll have the satisfaction in knowing that your data is there if something should happen.

Whether it’s for your business or personal use, you can’t go wrong backing up your data. You should always create a backup of your data at least once a month, even more than that if you have a lot of important information that you add to your laptop on a frequent basis.

Unfortunately, there are so many different types of security programs that we can download on to our computers. How do we know which program to use? Each one of them are good in their own way, but to know which one you need is up to you.

One of the oldest security programs that most know about is Norton security program. I’ve used it and I think it works just great. If you’re using this program, you’re pretty much in good hands.
What about McAfee Security Program? Well, I started using this program about two years ago when I bought a laptop and it was installed on it already. I found it to be just as good as Norton in protecting the computer from the outside world. What I found different was the fact that it’s security center was a lot easier to navigate through. Overall the two programs are just as good as the other.

If you want to know which program to use to protect your computer, I would say that any one of the two that I spoke about is good to go with, but there are some others out there that will work just as well. It’s a matter of personal preference in regards of which one will give you the best internet security. The reason I talked about Norton and McAfee is because they are the leaders when it comes to protecting your personal computer or laptop.

In another post I spoke about a plug-in called Intelligent Explorer. What a nightmare that could be for anyone who’s downloaded it by mistake. Spyware or adware items are constantly infecting computers and laptops. Too many computer don’t have any protection from them. That is one of the biggest mistakes that any computer owner can make.

According to a 2004 survey by AOL and the National Cyber Security Alliance, 91% of users questioned were familiar with the term spyware. Only 53% believed their computers were infected, but a scan found that 80% of their PCs had some type of spyware installed on them.” It goes on to say, “…The average number of spyware components per computer was 93 with one computer having well over a thousand.”

According to Butte College the definition for spyware is:
“The term ‘spyware’ is broadly defined as any program that gets into your computer without permission and hides in the background while it makes unwanted changes to your user experience.
Spyware is generally not designed to damage your computer. The damage it does is more a by-product of its main mission, which is to serve you targeted advertisements or make your browser display certain sites or search results.
At present, most spyware targets only the Windows operating system (Internet Explorer).”

Don’t get me wrong when I say that some spyware is harmless. Cookies are quite harmless, yes they infringe on your privacy, but that’s about it. Other than that, the rest can and are dangerous.
